What is Jamu?
Jamu [jah-moo] refers to traditional Indonesian herbal medicine, a practice that has been passed down through generations.
Postnatal binding, wrapping, and Jamu massage have been part of Chinese, Hindu, Indonesian, and Malay traditions for generations. These beautiful practices are rooted in care, connection, and deep respect for a mother’s healing journey after birth.
Jamu massage isn’t your typical massage — it’s created specifically for postpartum recovery. The techniques are focused on helping the body heal by improving blood flow, draining lymph, and gently supporting the body’s natural recovery. The word Jamu also refers to traditional herbal blends and plant-based treatments that are applied to the abdominal area beneath layers of cloth and wraps. It’s a complete ritual that supports physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing.
One of the core beliefs in Jamu is keeping the body warm — warmth is thought to speed up recovery and support overall healing. This is also why nourishing, warming foods are traditionally prepared during the first three months after birth — a time often referred to as the “confinement period.”
Jamu is also known as Bengkung belly binding, postpartum wrapping, or traditional Malay abdominal binding. In many of these cultures, the family gathers around the new mother as soon as she returns home, offering support so she can focus completely on bonding with her baby and resting.
During this time, family members help with daily tasks, make sure the mother gets enough rest, and protect her space — often keeping visitors away for the first month. They encourage breastfeeding, prepare special healing meals, and create a nurturing environment. Massage and herbal belly binding are part of this sacred care, not just for the mother, but often for the baby as well.
I’m bringing the heart of this tradition to you — a modern version of Jamu care that respects its roots while supporting your unique postpartum journey.
